IUI is generally known as intrauterine inseminations, and it is usually one of the first steps towards treating the infertility among the women. According to this procedure, the sperm from either the partner or from the donor is placed into the uterus of the woman, with the help of using a long, thin syringe. The process of IUI’s can also be accompanied by an oral fertility medication like Clomid, which is a series of fertility shots, or through the natural unmedicated cycle. Some of the woman also start this IUI procedure, without using the medication and have their IUI done around the time of a positive ovulation test.
There are many pros and cons of using the intrauterine inseminations. It has been observed that IUI has nearly 20 percent of the success rate per cycle. However, if a woman has a blocked tube or if they don’t ovulate regularly, then, under those circumstances IUI is definitely going to help. And, it can be helpful for the couples those who are having low sperm motility.
One of the main benefits why people are using this IUI is because of its low cost that is around, $300 per cycle, excluding the medications and lab tests, which are additional expenses. For the IUI tests, the recommended doctor performs the few basic tests for knowing the reasons of infertility. The sperm is then analyzed at the lab, in order to make sure that the sperm has a high enough sperm count and has enough mobility to travel to the egg. So, a woman needs to go through the blood test, basic ultrasound and also regular examination.
But, it has also been observed that in most of the cases, the IUI fails. So, most of the doctors recommends to try any other approaches, after the IUI fails for more than six times. And, also after so many attempts, one needs to consult with the gynecologist in order to know the cause of infertility. In some of the cases, the woman needs to go through ultrasound check ups for identifying the problems in their uterus or in the fallopian tubes. Some of the physicians also recommend going through a laparoscopy test, which normally removes the scar tissues from the endometriosis and gives a clear picture to the doctor, which helps them to know the reason of the blockages or any obstructions which prevents the egg from reaching the uterus.
So, when the IUI fails, some of the doctors prescribe some of the ovulation-inducing medication. One of the most popular method is Clomid, which an oral medication that makes the body to think that it’s not ovulating of its own. Under this process, most of the woman’s hormones sometimes overcompensate by producing the stronger ovulation, which it normally produces.
So, one can opt for using the fertility shots, after trying the Clomid for several times. These self- administered shots are often taken daily for almost 10 to 14 days which is followed by a shot of HCG, which is a pregnancy hormone that overshoots the eggs. Thus, these shots increase the chances of releasing the multiple eggs and increase the likelihood of having a pregnancy.
So, after IUI fails for a woman, the IVF is the only option for them, if they want to give birth by using their own eggs. One can also adopt the several fertility treatments which are available.
