At Home IUI

An intrauterine insemination, generally known as IUI is performed by threading a very thin and flexible catheter through the cervix and injecting the washed sperm directly into the uterus. It takes 60-90 seconds for the whole procedure to perform, right from the introducing catheter, then injecting the sperm and finally removing the catheter. So, relatively it is a short process. But, however during the semen collection and insertion, the couple needs to wait because the semen need to be washed properly before insertion, in order to avoid any complications.

Usually, for doing the IUI at home, the sample should be collected through ejaculating into a sterile collection cup, but this process can also be done by obtaining the collection of the condoms for this purpose. But, if a patient is staying nearby to the clinic, then, ejaculating the sperm into a special type of condom and obtaining it into a sterile collection cup is also possible. So, anything beyond the sperm collection is not possible at home, since this semen need to be washed properly before the insemination process, in order to remove everything from the sample excluding the sperm.

Also, one is recommended to keep the sample at the body temperature, when they take it to the clinic. At the clinic, one would get an estimated time as how long it would take for the sperm for insertion. Once the sperm gets ready, the doctor would insert the speculum in the woman’s body followed by the catheter. In some of the cases, the doctor even suggests the patient to lie down for about 15 minutes, after the procedure.

Ideally, the best timing for the IUI to be performed is within 6 hours. When the timing is based on an HCG injection, then IUI’s are usually done between 24 to 48 hours. And, when two IUI’s are scheduled, then, they are usually done within 12 hours. Some of the reports suggest, that the success rates increases with two IUI’s and it may even increase as much as to 6 percent.

Most of the woman considers IUI as relatively painless. But after the process, there can be some cramps but often most of the woman feels ovulation related issues rather than from the IUI. The injection of the catheter doesn’t arouse much simulation, as the cervix becomes ready for the ovulation.

But, in some of the cases, it is also recommended by the doctors to seek professional help from the clinics, rather than performing insemination method at home. As, there is risks involved when injecting the semen into the body or, even there are chances of getting air into the uterus. Infection is also one of the main concerns with these home procedures. As, the sperm should be placed inside the uterus along with the semen.

Another reason is this, that everything should be sterile for performing artificial insemination. For example: if the catheter is not sterile, then it might cause infection, which would be dangerous for a patient. And, also the sperm should be washed properly before ejaculation, which at times, becomes difficult for the patient to perform at home. So, for this reason, an average person would normally need assistance from a medical in order to ensure about the safety and hygiene. It needs to be done under a medical supervision.
