Ayurveda For Blood pressure

High blood pressure is also known as Hypertension. This condition if unattended can lead to heart attack.  Ayurveda, the ancient and holistic approach to healthcare has some effective treatment methods for curing high blood pressure.  The condition of high blood pressure is referred to as Rakta Capa Vriddhi in Ayurveda.  The aggravation of vata and pitta doshas is found to cause high blood pressure. The dosha disturbances repress the inner systems causing anxiety, anger, fear and frustration resulting in the disorders of the endocrine system. 

According Ayurveda high blood pressure is seen as a dysfunction of the three doshas namely vata, pitta and kapha.  The treatment aims to restore the balance of the doshas.  Ayurveda treatment for high blood pressure involves herbal medicines, diet, and lifestyle modification. Yoga and meditation are recommended for bringing calmness to and relaxing the body and mind.  The Ayurvedic approach is based on the concept of simple ways to reduce risks and to increase the disease resistance and improve strength.

Symptoms of High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure can be identified by clear and distinct symptoms such as

  • Headaches
  • Confusion
  • Nausea
  • Visual disturbances
  • Fatigue
  • Tinnitus (sound of ringing or buzzing in the ears)

Causes of High Blood Pressure

The narrowing of arteries or faster heart beat than normal and greater than normal volume of blood flow are the major causes of high blood pressure.  The other factors that may contribute to the rise of blood pressure are obesity, alcohol, smoking, stress, excess sodium intake and lack of exercise and sedentary lifestyle.


Ayurveda recommends a healthy diet that includes lots of vegetables and fruits that is also low in fat. 

  • Consume foods containing low calories and fat.
  • Select foods that are high in starch and fiber: Fruits, vegetables, dry peas and beans, whole-grain cereals, rice and breads and pasta can substitute for high fat foods.
  • Minimize or stop the use of caffeine, alcohol and tobacco.
  • Reduce the intake of Salt as it can speed up the heart rate.
  • Use more of herbs, spices that are salt-free for seasoning in cooking.

Ayurvedic Herbal Remedies for High Blood Pressure

The Ayurvedic physician may recommend Sarpagandha and Jatamansi for Vata, Sandalwood and Sarsaparilla for Pitta and Arunja for Kapha, depending on the dosha disturbance. These herbal medications are available in tablet, pill or powder form and should be taken for the period as instructed by the physician.


Arjuna (Terminalia Arjuna):  Arjuna is known to protect the heart by strengthening the circulatory system.  This helps in toning up the heart muscles and stopping bleeding and facilitating the healing process after a heart attack. 


Guggul (Commiphora Mukul):  Guggul has the power of lowering the fat levels in the body and helps to enhance the levels of good cholesterol HDL.  This natural product is found to be excellent in lowering the cholesterol levels in blood and is considered safe.

Garlic or Lasuna (Allium sativum): Garlic has been proven in clinical trials to be highly effective in reducing cholesterol levels.  Raw garlic is effective as it can prevent blood clots and destroys plaques that cause blockage in the arteries.


Yoga, Pranayama and Meditation

Apart from regular exercise, practices like yoga, Pranayama, the breathing techniques and meditation can provide excellent remedy for high blood pressure.  The benefits include reduction in the high heart rate and lowering the high blood pressure which is vital for a healthy heart. 



High blood pressure can be controlled by aromatherapy for alleviating stressful conditions.  Blue chamomile oil is highly effective used for inhaling directly.  Massaging the area under the collarbone with a mixture made up of blue chamomile oil, olive oil or sunflower oil during nights helps in reducing high blood pressure.
