Ayurvedic Cure For Depression

Depression is a mental state in which a person is sad sometimes even results in endangering the sufferer’s or other’s lives. This neurological disorder is characterized by hopelessness, change in body weight, unmotivated, irritable, lazy and indifferent. The depressed person usually avoids social events, family responsibilities and even relationships that can affect his life significantly.

Certain events in life such as illness, financial problem, losing a job, death of loved ones and divorce may often drive people to go into depression. This state of mind affects their performance adversely at work and life in general.  Depression should be treated before it leads to serious consequences.

Ayurveda for Depression

Known as Chittavsada, depression is considered not as a disease and is seen as an imbalance in the body in Ayurveda.   It is also considered as the vitiation of kapha dosha due to increase of tamas and rajas gunas of the mind.   Vata imbalance may also be the cause in a few cases.  Apart from imbalance of doshas, it is also due to the lack of awareness about the inner self.

Symptoms of Depression

  • Persistent Sadness
  • Feelings of worthlessness
  • Hopelessness
  • Withdrawn and mostly silent
  • Lack of concentration
  • Inability sleep or excessive sleeping
  • Loss of appetite or over-eating
  • Lack of interest in social activities

What are the causes?

Allergies and the disturbance of the metabolic process may affect the chemistry of the brain. This results in mood swings and depression.  The disturbance of the three doshas causes the nervous system and the brain to malfunction leading to depression.  It is therefore important to determine which of the doshas has caused the depression for deciding on the treatment.

Ayurvedic treatment for Depression

The Ayurvedic treatment addresses the body and the mind and therefore includes meditation, yoga and lifestyle changes along with medicines. The treatment involving massages can render the head a cooling effect and medicines called Rasayana are given to restore the balance of doshas in the body.
