Blood Sugar test

The normal sugar level in your blood should be between 70 and 110 mg/dl. This measurement is done before having your meal and the sugar level after the meal should be between 100 and 140. If the sugar levels have increased to be more than 140 mg/dl, then it is a clear case of diabetes.

Low sugar level in the body is also dangerous. It may cause weakness, dizziness and fainting. Blood sugar test is nothing but a test to check for diabetes. There are mainly two types of tests which are used to measure diabetes. They are:
  1. Fasting plasma glucose test (this is test conducted after 8 hours of fasting).
  2. Oral glucose tolerance test (test to check the ability of the body to handle excess fructose if a high glucose drink is consumed).
Let us read and understand them one by one. First of all, fasting plasma glucose test is considered to be positive if the level of sugar content in the blood is higher than 140 mg/dl. This means that the tested person is infected with diabetes. Normally, the fasting sugar level runs between 70 and 110 mg/dl. Oral glucose tolerance test is conducted for measuring plasma glucose after a consistent interval of not less than 3 hours. The patient should be tested in a fasting state of at least 8 to 10 hours. When the test starts, the patient is given a drink with a high content of glucose. After 30 minutes from the time of drinking, blood samples are taken for test. To test positive, the plasma level should be 200 mg/dl or higher after testing for several hours.
Any person, who is above 25 years old, can undergo blood sugar test so as to check the sugar content or level in the body. Even though the results are normal, people are advised to test at an interval of three years. Let us have a quick look at the ways to conduct blood sugar test or the ways to measure blood sugar level in a person’s blood.
Whole blood glucose test can be done at home, office or anywhere you go as portable testing kits are easily available in the market. The person’s finger tip s pricked to allow little blood to come out. A drop of blood is dropped on the testing strip on the instrument which is called as glucometer. This device checks the blood sugar level and shows results immediately on the screen. These days, several glucose monitoring devices are available and this helped people have control on the blood glucose levels in the body. Various medical camps are held so as to make people aware of the importance of blood sugar test.
What is the purpose of conducting blood sugar test? Well, this is an important and valuable question. This test is conducted so as to check the level of sugar content inside the human body. Out body uses sugar for supplying energy to the vital organs. Energy is given by glucose. However, having low sugar level or very high sugar level can be dangerous to one’s life. Therefore, it is important to conduct blood sugar tests and control the level of glucose.
