Bollywood Moms Back In Shape

Movie stars have always been looked up to as the standard by which physical beauty has been judged.  The generous curves of the1960’s  movie stars like Vyjanthimala and Asha Parekh has given way to the size zero look of the  Kareenas and Anushkas of today. Where actresses like Hema Malini and Sharmila Tagore gracefully retired after marriage and mother hood, today’s star moms are willing to take a sabbatical and come back to meaningful roles in cinema.  In an industry where physical appearance is of paramount importance, how do Indian actresses cope with the physical changes and weight gain which accompanies motherhood?


Retaining the figure post-pregnancy


In the West, it is not uncommon for an Angelina Jolie, Victoria Beckham or Heidi Klum to be wheeled off for a nip and tuck surgery straight off the delivery table. These celebrities retain their enviable figures even after having three or four children apiece. Nearer home, the latest star moms seem to be taking a holistic view to the physical changes which accompany pregnancy and motherhood.  Our yummy mommies, Aishwarya Rai-Bachhan, Shilpa Shetty-Kundra and Lara Dutta have been whole heartedly embracing motherhood and seem to be in no hurry to get back to their former svelte selves.

Aishwarya Rai-Bachchan gave birth to an eagerly awaited Beti B last year. She largely stayed out of the public eye in the time since the birth, taking on no new assignments, preferring instead to be a hands-on mother to daughter Aaradhya. Her occasional public appearance at some social do’s caused a lot of negative press about her shocking weight gain. Aishwarya silenced all critics at her appearance at the Cannes Film Festival where she carried off her carefully selected outfits with aplomb. Her excess weight went unnoticed in the light of her post motherhood glow, which added a new dimension to her beauty.


Shilpa’s love with yoga


New mother Shilpa Shetty-Kundra has taken a two year break, to enjoy time with her new born son. Shilpa has always been envied for her superb figure, which she credits to regular yoga sessions. Shilpa released her Yoga DVD some years earlier and her shape and fitness has been superb since then testifying her dedication. Her diet is for the most part comprised of organic food, but she occasionally indulges in her weakness for Sushi and Chinese cuisine.

Latest star mom and former Miss Universe, Lara Dutta released her DVD on pre natal yoga, while pregnant with her daughter, Saira. She has gone public, crediting her yoga sessions to her minimal post pregnancy weight gain.


How Malliaka Arora Khan keeps her fit


Inspired from Kareena, Malliaka has developed sheen for yoga. Upon asking regarding her passion for yoga, she said, “I have been learning yoga for some time. Kareena and Amu (Amrita Arora) introduced me to it. Payal Gidwani has been training me. I do yoga thrice a week at home with Payal’s girl, alternating it between gym and Pilates. Now I really look forward to my sessions with Kareena and Amu. We are yoga junkies.”

Malliaka Arora Khan recommends the following health tips for her fans and followers:

  1. Malliaka stresses more upon workouts rather than crash dieting. She believes in the age old saying that “Breakfast like a king, lunch like a prince, and dine like a pauper”.

  2. She prefers extra virgin oil for day to day cooking and recommends moderation while eating and saying strict “NO” to carbs in the evening. She prefers having carbs during the day time being a major source of energy.

Karishma Kapoor believes in having strong immunity rather than weak body profile. When asked regarding her fitness secret, she without hesitating said, “I eat everything and I am not choosy—that is the secret of my health. If our immunity is strong then we won’t fall ill or suffer stress”.

Tara Sharma is one more star mom who has regained her slender figure after childbirth, crediting it to an organic diet and yoga.  Not to forget Mandira Bedi who is back with her chic figure after becoming a mother.

While Yoga and healthy eating feature in their fitness mantra, they have slipped effortlessly into their real life roles as mothers, preferring to bond with their babies instead of going in for drastic weight loss programmes.
