Botox Treatment

Botox treatment, today, is considered as the best and most convenient way to look younger without the pain of surgery.  Botox makes you look younger by reducing the wrinkles on your face. The substance Botox is got from Botulinum Toxin Type A, a protein derivative from bacteria clostridium botulinum.  Though the bacteria is harmful and causes paralysis, the Botox treatment itself is quite harmless because a small amount of the chemical is injected into specific areas.  The treatment is approved by FDA and is positively harmless provided you get the treatment from an experienced health care giver of good reputation.

Why Botox treatment is popular

  • It is affordable as compared to cosmetic surgery
  • Recovery time is less than 24 hours after a Botox treatment as compared to other methods
  • The treatment is accomplished without using anesthesia or incisions

The treatment: how it works

A neurotransmitter called acetylcholine is blocked from being released when the Botox is injected in a particular region.  The function of the acetylcholine neurotransmitter is to send a nerve impulse to muscle cells that will allow them to contract.

When there is no acetylcholine the muscle cell becomes paralyzed.  When these muscles are responsible for causing wrinkles, then their paralysis will prevent formation of wrinkles. The effect of a Botox injection is temporary and will last for about six months, after which you will have to go in for the next Botox shot.  The paralysis of wrinkle causing muscles does not hinder the natural formation of other facial expressions.

Why people need Botox treatment

Botox has been in use for several decades to treat certain physiological conditions related to issues of the muscle and nerve fiber.  FDA approval and consequent popularity and prevalence of Botox for cosmetic use, came much much later.  The medical applications of Botox can be listed as

  • Treating muscle spasms and spasticity
  • Reducing frown lines between the eyebrows, squinting and horizontal lines on the forehead
  • Correcting nervous twitching of eyelids
  • Reducing under arm sweating
  • Treating cervical dystonia  (muscle spasms in the neck region)
  • Improving alignment of eyes

How long does the treatment remain effective?

When you first opt for Botox treatment, the wrinkles are kept at bay for about half a year.  After this period the wrinkles are likely to appear and have to be treated again.  After you have set a pattern for regular Botox treatment, you will see that the effect of the injection stays on for a longer period. Repeated and frequent use of Botox leads to the neurotransmitter developing antibodies and becoming immune to the injection.

Safety of Botox treatment

When Botox is injected in the right dose in the correct region of the face/body, there is hardly any problem, unless if you are allergic to the substance itself.  Other than that there are a few side effects that have been confirmed by many thousands of Botox loyalists.

Side effects

  • Headache and flu like symptoms
  • Eyelid drooping and eye twitching
  • A sensation of tightness in the skin
  • Soreness and redness in the region where injection has been administered
  • Facial pain and muscle weakness
  • Increased risk of respiratory infection
