Breast Implant Profiles

High profile breast implants are available both in saline and silicone makes. Those women with a narrower ribcage are recommended the high profile implants. The implant that fits this description is available both in saline and silicone.

Prior to opting for a breast augmentation/implant surgery it is important to be aware of the prevalent choices in the procedure.

There are a variety of parameters (like size and material of implant) that, with the help of your surgeon, can be discussed in order to allow for a unique and specifically suitable breast augmentation for you.

Do you want a silicone or saline implant? Should the contouring be rounded or natural? Do you want a high profile or a low profile implant? These are the sort of questions that should be discussed with the surgeon before the enhancement procedure. Among these, the profile of the implant is quite the most significant parameter as it decides the final look of the augmented procedure.

The four most important issues as regards a breast enhancement procedure are

  1. What materials are to be used for the surface and the filling

  2. What should the shape of the breast be after enhancement surgery

  3. What size should be opted for

  4. What kind of profile or projection should the augmentation have

The filling in breast implant

There are various substances to choose from for the augmentation filling. The first fills were made of only silicone gel. Later salt water or saline became a more convenient fill. The surface was only of silicone, whether the fill was salt water or gel.

However, FDA placed a ban on marketing of silicone (for breast enhancement applications) in 1992, since its safety had not been authenticated. From that time onwards, the silicone-gel filled implants have been made available to only women who opt for breast correction or reconstruction surgery.

There are three basic types of augmentation profiles.

High Profile

High profile breast implants are available both in saline and silicone makes. This particular type of implants helps a woman shed a dowdy look and makes her appear thinner in the higher chest area, while giving the implant contour a more pronounced projection. This implant is specially sought by women who have had several capsulectomies (surgeries to remove hardened and thick scarred tissues). Those women with a narrower ribcage are recommended the high profile implants.

Moderate Plus

Patients opt for it when do not want a very pronounced projection of the augmentation, nor so they want a flattened appearance of the breast. The implant that fits this description is available both in saline and silicone.

Moderate

This is somewhere between the high profile and the moderate profile implants. Neither is it flattened with minimum projection, nor does it have maximum projection.

These were the first implants available, way back in the 70’s. This profile type was in demand through the 80’s and 90’s until the high profile implant became popular. The moderate implants are wider at the base and have a projection much less than the high profile ones. Acquiring this type of implant makes a person appear matronly.

The disadvantage of this type of implant is its tendency to ripple. Patients who have a wide chest region are ideal candidates for this kind of implant. The high profile and the moderate plus profiles are more sought after implants. Surgeons too recommend these two types, in preference over the moderate profile augmentation.
