Causes Of Low Blood Pressure

Low blood pressure is equally detrimental to one’s health as much as high blood pressure is.

There are several factors that can cause low blood pressure but the most common one is a faulty diet.
  • A diet that is not nutritionally fit tends to make the tissues forming the walls of blood vessels to become overly relaxed and hence not sufficient oxygen is reached to the tissues. Malnutrition could be an effect of a diet that is bereft and wanting of calories, proteins, vitamin C or B.
  • At times the blood pressure may drop drastically if there is a hemorrhage or loss of blood. If there is slow bleeding in the gastrointestinal tract or through the kidneys or bladder then there are chances of that the patient will develop low blood pressure. In case of severe bleeding the person’s blood pressure can drop quickly to dangerous levels. The bleeding could be because of an accident, trauma, surgical complications or other problems such as ulcers, tumors.
  • Another surprising cause of low blood pressure is the emotional upheavals that one might have to go through in life. If one is dealing with disappointment after disappointment in one’s life it may result in low blood pressure.
  • Low blood pressure is quite common in young women with no other underlying disease. This could be due to the hormonal fluctuations.
  • Heredity is also a possible factor to be considered in low blood pressure. This might prove to be quite a challenge as whatever you eat or exercise regimen you follow the hereditary factors will ensure that your blood pressure remains low.
  • Another important cause that might be overlooked is dehydration. This is a known reason which could lead to low blood pressure due to constant vomiting and diarrhea. If water is not enough in our body along with the minerals that go with it then the blood pressure will be low.
  • In case of inflammation of the organs such as acute pancreatitis can result in low blood pressure. In this kind of a situation the fluid leaves the blood vessels and enters the pancreas in turn depleting the volume of blood from the abdominal cavity.
  • Heart disease is also one of the reasons for low blood pressure. In case of weakened heart muscles the amount of blood that it pumps reduces. Diseases of the heart such as bradycardia and tachycardia can go on to give one low blood pressure over a long period of time. This could even cause low blood pressure that could be life threatening.
  • Certain medications such as calcium channel blockers, beta blockers or digoxin also known by the name of lanoxin can slow the rate of the heart and in turn bring about low blood pressure. There are certain medications that are used for treating high blood pressure can go on to excessively lower blood pressure and result in symptomatic low blood pressure over a period of usage.
  • Certain drugs used to not allow water retention such as lasix can decrease the blood volume as it induces excessive urination.
  • Certain other drugs and medication that is used to treat depression, Parkinson’s disease, erectile dysfunction, when used in combination with nitroglycerine can cause low blood pressure.
  • The use of alcohol and narcotics in excess and over a long period of time can also cause one’s blood pressure to drop suddenly.
  • Sudden emotions of fear and pain can cause a vasovagal reaction which could be a resultant reason for low blood pressure.
  • Low blood pressure can be also related to posture. If a person stands up after remaining seated for a while the blood settles in the blood and less reaches the heart. This can result in a sudden drop of blood pressure.
  • Diabetis and alcoholism damage the autonomic nerves which in turn do not circulate the blood adequately throughout the body resulting in low pressure.
