Diet After Gastric Band Bypass Surgery

Gastric band bypass surgery is an operation performed to reduce the weight of a person. During the course of the surgery, doctors keep a band around the stomach of the patient so that he will have a smaller stomach. This results in a feeling of fullness in the stomach and the food consumption reduces. This reducing of the food may lead to weight loss and in worst cases, deficiency in nutrients and vitamins. Once the patient cannot take food to the usual level, the body will not be able to suck up the calories from it.

After the Bypass gastric surgery, the size of the stomach will be much smaller this is also the reason for the reduction of food. The surgery also helps in the reduction of the weight and changes the way the stomach and the intestine handle the food that intake. Even if the patient takes lesser food, he or she will feel satisfied. The food that is taken by the patients will not be absorbed, as only a small portion goes into the stomach and small intestine.

Most of the people take time to return to normalcy after the gastric band bypass surgery. The patients should take the food much slowly which must be chewed properly. Otherwise, they may suffer from frequent vomiting and pain. Once the surgery is done, the patients should not drink water within thirty minutes before and after the food. At this time, the stomach will only have a small space left for liquid and solid food.

After the gastric band bypass surgery, it is advisable for the patients to avoid foods like: candies, juices, ice cream, condiments and soft drinks. The intake of these foods may result in problems like: dumping syndrome. The cause of this problem is the moving of the food rapidly in the intestines and the stomach. This will create other health issues like: quivering, sweating, giddiness, quick heart rate and acute diarrhoea.

In most of the cases, the doctors allow the patients to have food that do not cause uneasiness. The patients will be able to eat only a little amount of food at a given time and it is essential to include vitamins and nutrients as recommended by the surgeon and dietician. If the patient eats foods containing calories like milkshakes, the effect of the gastric band will be reduced or cancelled. The patients can take a smaller amount of food like appetizers, if they go out. It is advisable to finish at the same time as the companions to make the hostess realize that it is not possible to eat too much.

In the post operational period, it is advisable to take the word of a physician who will give the patient a psychological support and a whole new attitude towards food. The patient can start the normal food after eight weeks of surgery. If the patient starts the diet with high protein food items, he can enjoy the advantages of the gastric bypass surgery to the maximum.
