Diet Plan For Uric Acid

Uric acid is created is formed in the liver and it carried around the body through the blood and reaches the kidney and gets eliminated through urine.  When foods that contain lots of a substance called ‘purine’ are consumed it leads to the formation of uric acid in the body.  When this acid is created in excess it may cause a condition known as ‘gout’.  High uric acid can result in kidney stones and other kidney disorders that result from a condition known as hyperuricemia.  It may also cause pain in lower back and abdomen in addition to inflammation and discomfort while urinating.

Renal failure, lead poisoning and failed chemotherapy are other factors that can cause excess of uric acid formation in the body.  It can worsen the condition of patients suffering from leukemia, diabetes and hypertension.

The uric acid usually gets accumulated in the joints as crystals and can affect the toes. Gout patients are normally advised to take a diet to control excess formation of uric acid.  This way the patient can get relief from too much pain. To maintain the right levels of uric acid in the body, the diet should be adjusted in a balanced way so as to control the production of uric acid as well as its expulsion.

Diet to control uric acid

  1. Foods with high uric acid content should be stopped. They are red meat, organ meat, pork, lamb, shrimps, lamb, chicken organ meats, turkey, goose and certain variety of seafood such as sardines, hearts and mussels.  Cauliflower, mushrooms and certain spinach are also rich in purines that cause uric acid and should be excluded from the diet. Reduce consumption of bacon, oatmeal, peas, dried beans and asparagus.
  2. Alcoholic beverages such as wine and beer should be completely eliminated from the diet to reduce uric acid levels. Alcohol also hinders the process of eliminating uric acid from the body; its consumption should be stopped completely.
  3. The food should contain high levels of complex carbohydrates and potassium and low in proteins.
  4. Drink plenty of water so that excess uric acid can be flushed out from the body.
  5. Foods rich in potassium like apples, oranges, potatoes, dried peaches, orange juice and bananas are good.  Other foods such as skimmed milk, yogurt, yam, kidney beans are also good for reducing uric acid in the body.  Celery, tomatoes, eggs, cheese, butter and peanut butter, corn, tart cherries and parley and cabbage are recommended. Tea is also low in purines. Soy products like tofu, fibrous foods, lemon, chocolates and carbonated beverages are also good choices of foods to combat excess uric acid. Pineapples, red bell pepper and red cabbage are contain vitamin C and are highly effective in reducing uric acid naturally. Olive oil, nuts, flax seeds are other foods to use for uric acid reduction.
