Hair and Skin Care During pregnancy

During pregnancy, many changes happen in our body including hair. In most cases, the hair of a pregnant woman becomes more healthy and shiny during pregnancy as a result of the activities of hormones. However, after the delivery, the hormone levels come back to a normal stage and the normal shedding and growing cycle of your hair would be restored, thereby; increasing the chances for hair thinning.

However, changes can happen to the hair texture also like straight hair getting a small bounce or curls or curly hair becoming straight. There is nothing much to worry about it and there is no need to bring in big changes in your hair care unless required. If need be, the hair care routine can be modified slightly according to the hair texture.
There are chances of dry hair becoming oily and oily hair becoming dry. You may need to change your conditioner and shampoo accordingly. Sometimes, the products have to be changed, whereas in other cases, just changing the routine would be enough. Perming or colouring of hair should not be done without consulting a doctor, if you are an expecting mom. This is very important as the chemicals applied to the hair may have some effects on the baby.
Even if your doctor has given permission for colouring, the hair-stylist should be informed of the pregnancy. The stylist may be able to suggest alternative treatments in which the direct contact with the scalp can be avoided. There are also chances that the response of the hair to these treatments would be changed and notifying your stylist would help in finding out alternative options, if needed.
Skin care is equally important during pregnancy. Like the hair, pregnancy can result in skin changes also. However, if you take care of skin, skin management during pregnancy would become easier.
If you have been using soap, it is better to change to a body wash. The reason for this is the possibility of the natural oils being removed from the body with the use of soap thereby making the skin drier.
There is a possibility the skin becoming drier due to dehydration as a result of prolonged baths. It would be better to take bath fast. The skin is more prone to tan or turning red during pregnancy. This problem can be solved by paying more attention to the skin protection by using sunscreen lotions. Ensure that the product would be suitable for the current requirements and is safe for your body.
Itching is a commonly found problem during pregnancy. To deal with it, apply gel on your tummy. Care should be taken to do this very gently. This massaging has other benefits like making your skin supple and reducing the possible stretch marks. Your feet need special care as they can become tired easily. Washing your feet in lukewarm water everyday would help. Wash the face often to rule out the possibility of getting more pimples and acnes during pregnancy. Medication for pimples is not advised by most of the doctors considering the possible ill-effects on the baby.
