Home Remedies for Gingivitis


Gingivitis is the disease caused by the inflammation of the gums. Gingivitis has no prominent symptoms in its early stage and therefore it becomes hard to detect this condition for a long time. It affects the tissues surrounding the teeth and can also lead to the destruction of bone and tooth loss apart from embarrassing situations such as bad breath.


Gingivitis is caused due to the toxic emulsion from plaque, bacteria and food particles accumulation between the gums and the teeth causing inflammation of the gums. Painful gums, bleeding while brushing, red gums, swollen gums, tender gums, bad breath and bad taste in mouth are few symptoms which.  If it is left untreated it may lead to loosening of the teeth as the membranes securing the teeth get weakened.

Home Remedy for Gingivitis


1. Gingivitis can be cured effectively by rubbing the gums with clove oil. There may be burning sensation but it will heal the ailment.  Chewing a piece of clove in the mouth in another alternative.


2. Brush regularly after meals. Use Toothpaste containing mint, babool, neem and holy basil as these minerals avoid the spreading of the infection, and also reduce the swelling or inflammation. 


3. Gargling also helps in treating gingivitis. Gargle by taking a glass of lukewarm water and add a pinch of salt to it, twice a day. One can also add a tsp of triphala powder. 


4. Gargle with water in which a few drops of hydrogen peroxide is added


5. Rubbing clove oil on the painful gums is a good home remedy for Gingivitis.


6. Aloe Vera is an effective medicine for treating gingivitis. Rub the Aloe Vera pulp in the mouth and gargle with water as it can relieve inflammation of the gums. Repeat the process a few times


7. Prepare a mixture by grinding 2 tsp of white oak bark herbal powder, 1 tsp of myrrh herbal powder, ¾ tsp of peppermint leaves' powder and 1/8 tsp of clove powder. Have 1 tablespoon of this mixture every morning and night. Rub this over the affected area of the mouth.



8. Eat diet with low saturated fats.


9. Apply a mixture of baking soda and water over the affected area with a finger and then brush with the herbal powder. This helps to neutralize the acidity of bacteria.


10. Intake lot of fresh fruits, sprouts and vegetables in your diet. Foods rich in fiber and vitamin C and those that have low saturated fats should be made part of your daily meal. It is better to get them from a farmer’s market or your own kitchen garden. This way you can get plenty of falvonoids that are excellent anti oxidants.


11. Foods rich in vitamin C also help in curing gum disease so consume plenty of strawberries and blueberries. 


12. Cranberry juice is very effective in treating gingivitis. Intake cranberry juice without any sugar.


13. Use a mouthwash that contains sage oil, peppermint oil, menthol, chamomile tincture, etc. Toothpaste which contains neem, babool, basil, sage oil, peppermint oil would be effective in treating gingivitis.


14. Intake of calcium rich foods ensures healthy teeth which helps prevent Gingivitis.


15. Keep your tooth brush in a dry place. Change your toothbrush every 2 or 3 months.


16. Avoid excessive consumption of chocolates, soft drinks and refined sugar products.


17. Avoid foods that are too cold or too hot.


18. Avoid smoking and follow a healthy lifestyle.
