Home Remedies for Leg Cramps

Though leg cramps is a general problem common in elderly people, it can also be seen in young people very often. As such this problem causes different symptoms for different people but pain and discomfort are very commonly seen. The pain can be agonizing one such that the patient can hardly stand or it be a mild pain with minute tenderness associated with it. Most common areas of the attack of the pain include the calf muscles, quadriceps and hamstrings. The period of the leg cramps can range from as long as an hour to as small as a minute or two.  Overweight people who work for long ours standing become victims of leg cramps.

Causes of Leg Cramps
 
Leg cramps occur due to the involuntary contraction of muscles in the legs.
 
  • Obesity
  • Rigorous exercises
  • Hormonal or fluid imbalances, electrolyte
  • Overexertion causing muscle fatigue
  • Sunstroke or dehydration
  • Abnormalities in nerves
  • Disorders of the muscles or nerves
  • Irregular blood supply
  • Medicinal side effects of some of the medicines such as diuretics
  • Some of the diseases also increase the chances causing leg cramps like diabetes
  • Doing a different exercise than what is regularly performed
Symptoms of Leg Cramps
 
  • Experience of acute pain in the leg
  • Tenderness of the muscles of the leg
  • Unable to move leg for as long as the pain is experienced
  • Pinched nerves
  • Ulcers in the leg
  • Presence of bruises in the leg
  • Legs become cold and bluish in color
  • Itchiness in the legs
  • Swollen legs
  • Tenderness in the calf muscles
  • Rashes may also be noticed in the legs
Home Remedy for Leg Cramps
 
Home remedies are useful in loosening up the tensed muscles and relieving the leg cramps.
 
  • Use an ointment to massage the cramped muscle in the natural direction of the muscle.
  • If you are on the bed, stretch your leg to the maximum extent and if you are standing on the floor, bend the toe in the upward direction and push the heels in the forward direction. This will help to lengthen the muscles. Hold the same position for at least half an hour. It is especially helpful in treating a cramped calf muscle.
  • Use a heating pad or you can also use a warm towel to get relief from the pain.
  • Application of cold pads over the cramped muscle will relax the muscles.
  • If you face the problem of leg cramps quiet frequently, drink tea prepared from chamomile for at least five times in a day. Continue the treatment for two weeks at least. For the preparation of the tea, take two to three tablespoons of chamomile flowers and add them to water. Keep it on fire till it boils then let the flowers steep in the boiling water for few minutes. After that strain the water and add small amount of sugar or honey to it.
  • Drinking a glassful of milk before going to sleep at night is the most simple and effective way for the treatment of leg cramps.
  • Make a tea with red raspberry leaf tea in the morning and night for at least 14 days which is a very effective home remedy for leg cramps.
  • Daily intake of cod liver oil is a good way to prevent aches and other ailments.
  • Take 3 to 4 walnuts on empty stomach early in the morning to help relieve leg pain.
  • Take 2 teaspoons of fennel powder in water every morning to fight leg pain.
  • Another helpful home remedy for leg pain is to boil half teaspoon of saffron in half a cup of water and make three parts to take with water three times daily for a week.
  • Yoga postures such as Uttanpadasana, Gomukhasana are helpful to get rid of leg pain.
  • Deficiency in Calcium, Potassium and Magnesium can cause leg cramps, so make sure you include foods rich in these ingredients.
  • Taking vitamin B tablets regularly can also help to cure leg cramps.
  • Drink plenty of water especially during exercising do that the body remains hydrated to prevent leg cramps.
  • The hamstring can be relaxed by sitting down by stretching the legs and pulling the toes towards the knee for many times.
