Sinusitis is an infection and inflammation of the upper respiratory tract known as the sinus passage. The sinuses are hollow air passages located in between the bones surrounding the nose. There will be problems of drainage of the mucus due to blockage in the sinuses leading to pain due to pressure build up around the eyes, nose and cheeks. It is characterized by the excessive secretion of mucus in the nasal passage and throat and swelling of the nose. Home remedies for sinusitis are helpful in healing by reducing the sinus swelling and blockage in the nasal passage. They are mostly concoctions made with ingredients available in the kitchen at home and can be prepared easily.
- Tilt your head back and drop a teaspoonful of onion juice in each nostril. Repeat this if needed.
- Warm compress can help in relieving the facial pain. Place a towel dipped and squeezed in hot water on your face and concentrate around the nose, cheeks, and eyes.
- In the initial days of infection intake of lots of fluids in the form of fruit juices, liquids and water is useful home remedy for sinusitis as it can help in draining the excess mucus. Caffeinated drinks should be avoided as they can dehydrate the system.
- Make a mixture of a few drops of eucalyptus oil and 1/2 cup boiling water. Pour the mixture into a bowl and inhale the steam for 10 - 15 minutes covering your head with a large towel.
- Add a few drops of eucalyptus oil on your handkerchief and sniff it periodically to clear the sinuses.
- Blowing once nostril at a time is a good way to prevent bacteria from entering the sinus passage from the ears.
