How do Dandruff Shampoos Work

Dandruff is an embarrassing condition, since dandruff flakes off on clothes and is unsightly. Dandruff is a condition of the scalp wherein the skin flakes off in patches. This condition could be a cosmetic one due to temporary dryness of the scalp. Often an underlying health condition like a Vitamin deficiency or allergic condition may cause this condition or aggravate a pre-existing condition. Dandruff has been known to cause outbreaks of pimples and acne on the back and forehead.

 

What are the Causes of Dandruff

 

Doctors feel that a yeast infection is what triggers off dandruff. Yeast cells proliferate on the epidermal layer of the scalp can cause irritation of the cells, which form scales. The scales are shed periodically as dandruff.

 

Medicated Shampoo as a Cure for Dandruff

 

Doctors recommend regular use of dandruff shampoos as the first line of treatment for dandruff. 

 

 

These shampoos contain anti -fungal ingredients which inhibit scaling .When applied on to wet hair, these shampoos wash and clean the hair of accumulated dirt and grease. Hair products like dye, hair setting gel and spray also form a layer on the scalp are washed off with the shampoo. When the medicated shampoo is rubbed on to a clean scalp, the ingredients work to break up the existing dandruff flakes and to inhibit further formation of dandruff. Chemicals like ketoconazole are added to inhibit yeast growth and scaling reducing dandruff significantly.

 

Special shampoos have additives like Vitamin E and B and natural moisturizing agents like aloe Vera gel .These ingredients supply essential moisture to the scalp and keep the hair roots nourished and healthy.

 

Doctors feel that an imbalance in the pH level of the scalp causes dryness and dandruff. Dandruff shampoos are formulated using ingredients like Selenium sulphide and zinc pyritheone to effectively balance the acidity level of the scalp. Dandruff shampoos sold under the names of Nizoral and Selsen have been around for decades and have been effective in curing chronic dandruff.

 

How to Use Dandruff Shampoo

 

For best results, a capful of shampoo should be rubbed on to wet scalp and hair and rinsed off after 10 minutes. For optimum results,  use dandruff shampoo twice a week for 8 weeks.

 

Dandruff shampoos are not recommended for use by children below 12 years of age or by pregnant and lactating women. Dandruff shampoos should not be used on a broken or inflamed scalp. 

 

If dandruff persists even after a course of shampoo, it is advisable to consult a doctor.
