How to Do a Basic At-Home Facial

A facial is a beauty treatment for cleansing and refreshing facial skin, which is the most exposed part of the body. Professional treatments cost both time and money and are a monthly indulgence for most of us.  A quick, do it at home facial can be conveniently had using a few things readily available at home. Not only does it work out cheaper than a facial in a parlour, but it can be done on a weekly basis by you.

Things required for a basic facial

  1. Basin and thick towel
  2. Cleanser to remove dirt, grime and oil from the facial skin.
  3. Paste of roughly ground oatmeal  and honey
  4. Ice cubes
  5. Thick Moisturising cream
  6. Paste of Fuller’s earth and Rose water for oily skin. Paste of gram flour and honey or mashed papaya and banana for dry skin
  7. Cucumber slices

Procedure for facial:

  1. Apply cleanser over your face, ears and neck. Use cotton balls to remove any surface grime and dirt. Wash face with plain water

  2. Use the roughly ground paste of oatmeal and honey to exfoliate your face to remove dead skin cells. Wash well with cold water.

  3. Boil water in a vessel. Pour the boiling water into a basin and steam your face over it. Take care to cover your head and the basin with a thick towel to prevent steam from escaping. The steam opens up the pores of the skin and hidden dirt and grime can come out easily while it softens the skin.  A good quality electrical steamer can be purchased at any chemist shop. In case you have a kettle with a spout, boil water in the kettle and hold your face in the steam near the spout of the kettle.

  4. Splash cold water over your face. Dab moisturising cream over your face and gently massage your face.  Let the cream soak in. After 5 minutes, wipe off excess cream with a cotton ball.

  5. Place cucumber slices over the eyes for a few minutes. This can give a cooling effect for the eyes and also much required relaxation.

  6. A face mask of Fuller’s earth and Rose water is ideal for oily skin. For dry skin, mix honey in gram flour and apply over face. Keep the face mask on for 15 minutes and then wash well. Where skin is excessively dry and tanned a fruit mask of mashed ripe papaya and banana can also be applied on the face to get suppleness and glow naturally.

  7. Pat the face dry and rub an ice cube wrapped in a tea towel over the face.
