A decade of marriage, successful TV appearances of the whole family and a much envied family profile of Jon and Kate came to naught when their divorce came through in December last year.
The reason for divorce according to Jon was because Kate wanted it and Kate is known to have stated that Jon’s behavior in the recent months left her with no choice but a separation. Kate opted for the divorce. The papers were filed by both Jon and Kate in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Divorce seemed inevitable for Kate in order to provide them a safe and emotionally positive backdrop for growing up.
There are rumors that Jon’s alleged relationship with Hailey Glassman, (daughter of the plastic surgeon who Kate visits) was one of the chief factors that helped Kate decide on the divorce. However, Hailey claims that Jon and she became close only after the divorce proceedings were initiated. It was Jon who initiated the divorce proceedings while Kate filed the no-fault divorce papers.
It was decreed that Kate would continue to have primary custody of the eight children (a pair of twins and sextuplets) and live in their family home. Jon has been awarded visiting rights, just as the couple wished. Kate is pleased with the decision and relieved that the divorce proceedings have been finalized, says her lawyer, Mark Momjian. However, Jon would be obliged to pay a hefty for children support.
Jon and Kate became a household name after they began their show called Jon and Kate Plus Eight. The show was first aired on Discovery Health and then was telecast on the TLC channel. It became the highest rated and most viewed show in which the family life and the challenges of bringing up eight children were highlighted.
The hit show was aired for five seasons. When fissures appeared in the married life, divorce papers were filed in June last year. The last episode was aired on November 22, when both the couples were shown spending time separately with their children and talking about the marriage break-up.
Sources suggest that the end to the marriage was caused by Jon’s indiscretion, his alleged affairs and his breaching of the TLC channel’s contract. Due to this kind of behavior the knell was sounded on one of the most successful TV shows ever. Besides this, Kate’s ex-fiancé is reported to have said that Kate cheated during their engagement and usually went after men who had a lot of money.
The couple wished for an amicable settlement and both declare the children’s interest, safety and emotional well being as their top priorities. Both realize that the transition to living separately and caring for the children separately will bring in a lot of challenges, which they hope to face positively.
