Neurological Symptoms of Celiac Disease

The symptoms associated with celiac disease have been classified into various groups. The neurological symptoms are one of them. There is a need to identify these symptoms adequately since most of these symptoms are found to remain unnoticed in many cases.

Like other types of symptoms associated with this disease, the neurological symptoms also can be classified to two types such as less severe and complicated symptoms. The minor or less severe symptoms of this disease include fatigue.
The behavioral changes such as mood problems, irritability and depression can be classified to the severe types of symptoms. The seizures are also commonly seen in many cases of the disease. In a seizure, the brain of the patient would experience an unusual and electrical activity. The possible effects of these are alterations in movement, sensation and consciousness. These are the common neurological symptoms often associated with celiac disease patients.
According to the ‘Mayo Clinic’, neuropathy can also be included in the possible numerological symptoms of celiac disease. The symptom is triggered by significant damages to the patient’s nerves. There will be tingling in the feet as well as legs. However, there are many people who are not aware of the possible neurological symptoms or even if they occur this celiac disease is not taken into consideration.
There is also the possibility of these symptoms worsening if the disease is not identified and treated well according the requirement of the individuals. In people who experience neuropathy, there will be a considerable decrease in the sensation level. In worsened cases, determining changes in the temperature level would not be possible.
These changes can get worse later as the disease advances and there is a need to correct this since these people may not be able to recognize even if an injury occurs on the body. This may cause excessive leaking of blood. Also these symptoms may be present even if other symptoms lack. This was not identified during the earlier stages and the diagnosis for this disease focused mainly on physical and other signs. The information regarding this came out after several studies on celiac disease patients.
A patient should be diagnosed for the neurological symptoms also even if he or she is cleared of the tests for physical symptoms. These symptoms may not trouble you immensely during the initial days. In some of the patients with problems due to celiac diseases, even vitamin deficiency would not be present. In some of the cases, these systems appeared before other symptoms such as diarrhea, rashes etc whereas in several others these symptoms are followed by the physical symptoms. In other words, it will not be possible to say the exact timing of onset of neurological symptoms in patients suffering from celiac disease.
In short, neurological symptoms are also given much importance during the diagnosis for the disease. They may appear at any time even before other symptoms start appearing. If not identified and treated accordingly, they can get worse thereby leading to several consequences.
