Reasons behind pain in the right abdomen are many, most common among those being gastritis, acidity, constipation and indigestion. The increasing number of reasons behind pain in the right abdomen can mostly be traced back to unhealthy eating habits. Eating out very frequently many times lead to food poisoning, stomach upsets or indigestion and all of these stomach ailments cause pain. This is because the level of hygiene and quality of food items provided by restaurants, street vendors and fast food stalls are usually not up to the mark and many a times they even use stale food items to make the dishes which cause problems in the abdomen if taken frequently.
The right part of the abdomen is separated from the left part of the abdomen by an imaginary line starting from the base of the chest through the belly button till the genitals. When discussing problems behind pain in the right abdomen it’s important to have a look at the organs present in the right abdomen. the organs which form the right part of the abdomen are the right kidney , gall bladder , right fallopian tube , duodenum , right adrenal gland , right ureter , blood vessels in the right side of the abdomen , the appendix , right ovary in females , pancreas , liver , the right part of large intestine , the dermal layers that form the right side of abdomen and the muscles lining the right wall of the intestine . Any problem in any of these organs contributes towards pain in the right abdomen. Apart from these there are also many other organs which though not a part of the right abdomen, can cause pain there because of their own malfunctioning. These organs include tumors from other parts of the body and the lower part of the right lung.
Some of the diseases and problems related to the right part of the abdomen which are reasons behind pain in the left abdomen are gastritis , constipation , acidity , stomach upset , indigestion , ovarian cyst (in case of females ) , duodenal ulcers , kidney stones or ureteric stones , ectopic pregnancy , trapped wind , cholecystitis ( i.e. inflammation of the gall bladder ) , appendicitis , pulled muscles and gall stones ( also known as biliary colic).these right abdominal ailments are very common and cause a lot of damage if not given proper medical attention.
One of the reasons behind pain in the right abdomen is pain in the right ovary which is usually one of the major reasons behind pain in the right abdomen in women and is caused because of formation of an ovarian cyst causing pain in the lower half of the right abdomen which may later on spread to the thigh. Another very common reason behind right abdominal pain is appendicitis. It is common in the age group between nine to forty years of age and requires operation. Its initial symptoms are pain in the right abdomen below the naval and loss of appetite. An upper right abdomen related disease which is one of the reasons behind pain in the right abdomen is gall bladder disease. Its symptoms are fever, vomiting and waves of pain in the upper part of the right abdomen .Gall bladder stones are caused because of entrapping of a gall stone inside the gall bladder and is usually very painful. Kidney stones are again one of the fatal reasons behind pain in the right abdomen. They are not life threatening if taken care of immediately, but proper medical supervision is strictly recommended. Sometimes when the size of the kidney stone is small, it can be passed out easily; in case of big kidney stones, it causes obstruction and needs to be dealt with immediately .It also causes waves of pain , sweating , uneasiness , vomiting etc.
Furthermore one of the reasons behind pain in the right abdomen in children is mesenteric lymphadenopathy which causes pain in the lower abdomen. Its symptoms include swollen neck glands , cold and sore throat. Other symptoms are common to that of appendicitis except the fact that the child doesn’t lose its appetite.
Other reasons behind pain in the right abdomen are polycystic ovaries, food poisoning, hernia obstruction or strangulation, pneumonia in the right lower lobe , crohns disease etc.
