Recovery After Abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery helps to remove the excess skin and fat deposits that appear as a consequence of pregnancies, old age and obesity, when the whole abdominal area is affection.

Due to the tightening of the muscles in the abdominal area, you won’t be allowed to drive, have sex or do demanding exercises for the first 2-3 weeks. The main idea is not to strain the abdominal muscles for at least 6 weeks after the intervention. In the first weeks after the surgery you may notice that the abdomen is swelling which is absolutely normal due to the changes that occur in your organism.
Scars are another major problem faced after abdominoplasty. The size of the scar depends on the amount of the skin that has been cut off, the techniques used for the surgery, the surgeon’s skills and the body ability to recover. The scars will get to a normal skin color in 1-2 years.  

Recovery tips for abdominoplasty

  • After the surgery, the patient must start walking short distances. This would avoid tiredness and lethargy.
  • After the stitches are removed you will be advised to start performing light non aerobic exercise. They help you from getting stiff and can speed recovery.
  • Consuming all the prescribed medications from time to time.
  • Draining the excess fluid that accumulates between the skin flap and muscle is also an important activity.
  • You are restricted to use the public jacuzzi or pool in the first month.
  • Ample bed rest is also a significant point to be remembered.
  • Diet plays a major role so an equilibrated diet is recommended in order to help the muscles tighten and avoid gaining kilos again.
