Sleep Apnea and Weight Gain

The human body is just like a machine. As a machine needs fuel to function properly, the body also needs a right diet and proper sleep. Now, what is meant by proper sleep? Well…a normal adult needs seven to eight hours of sleep in day. Without proper rest the body will be unable to function normally. Moreover, different problems will start cropping up due to lack of sleep. All these problems have harmful effects on the body as well. Some of the major sleep disorders like sleep apnea, insomnia, somnambulism have their respective effects on the body. Some of them cause stomach problems, some causes skin problems while some others lead to psychological problems. This article will mainly focus on how sleep apnea can lead to weight gain. It has been observed that sleep apnea and weight gain has a direct link between them. Both sleep apnea and weight gain are serious health hazards. Many people even do not realize how important it is to have a sound sleep for maintaining good health as well as maintaining healthy weight. The overweight people may suffer from many health problems which includes sleep apnea as well. Sleep is considered to be a necessary and normal function of your body. If you do get sufficient sleep, your brain cannot perform the necessary functions with clarity. The body needs sleep for mending the body. Without proper sleep, many health conditions like physical and emotional, weight gain and fatigue can arise easily.

Overweight people are a greater risk to suffer from the sleep disorder known as sleep apnea. The patients suffering from sleep apnea gets awakened several times in the night sometimes even without understanding that they are having a ceased or blocked airway. The airway gets blocked because of the excessive tissue present around their throat and neck region. This is commonly found the overweight people.

On the other hand, doctors have also concluded that people having sleep apnea can also gain weight. This might occur as they cannot enter deeper stages of sleep. Another important reason to show the relationship between sleep apnea and weight gain is due to lack of hormone production. The hormones are responsible for regulating every change and movement in a body. The most important hormones that help to maintain a normal weight are leptin and grehlin.

Both leptin and grehlin help in regulating the need of the body in gaining and losing weight. They also regulate your appetite. The most important factor that you should know about these hormones is that both of them are affected due to inadequate sleep. Leptin helps in suppressing your appetite where as Grehlin helps in increasing the appetite.  Grehlin can even help in losing weight (by the mechanism of starvation prevention within the body).

If you are suffering from sleep apnea and also notice a gain of weight, this is mainly because of the fluctuations that occur in these hormone levels. Due to lack of sleep, the Grehlin level of the body increases to a great extent. This can increase your hunger. Simultaneously, the amount of leptin decreases significantly. At that time, both the mind as well the body feels the urge of eating more. This in turn causes weight gain.

The most important thing to be taken into consideration is that even after doing exercises and having a good diet, people suffering from sleep apnea may still gain weight. Therefore, right at that juncture you should consult a doctor. By managing sleep apnea, a person can lose weight.

Sleep apnea and weight gain can lead to many complications such as high levels of blood pressure, heat failure and increased risk of a heart disease. Therefore, a very good care of the diet needs to be taken in case you have sleep apnea. Losing weight is sometimes considered to be a suitable option to get rid of sleep apnea to some extent. Biking and weight lifting can also reduce weight as well as sleep apnea in some cases.

Therefore, if you are suffering from sleep apnea and also gain weight simultaneously, without wasting time, get it diagnosed by a doctor. Maintaining a good diet along with proper exercises and some positive results will certainly be noticed.
