Vitamin and Calcium Supplement for Weight Loss

Vitamins in food sources and as supplements help maintain good health. They are also known to increase metabolism and help decrease body weight. Vitamin D, Vitamin C and calcium supplements assist weight loss in the following manner.

Vitamins for Weight Loss

Vitamin D

A study conducted not so long ago by researchers of the University of Minnesota indicated that those obese people who took increased supplements of Vitamin D, were more successful in losing weight. They lost about 227 grams more than those who only followed the diet plan and did not take increased Vitamin D supplements.

An Archives of Internal Medicine study showed that more than three quarters of the American population (both adults and teens) have Vitamin D deficiency. Weight loss researchers, though unable to pinpoint whether Vitamin D deficiency leads to obesity or vice versa, feel that there is a link between obesity and Vitamin D deficiency.

Sunlight, Vitamin D and calcium supplements together play a vital role in digestion assimilation, and blood sugar regulation. When there is calcium and Vitamin D deficiency, the body will start producing more of the enzyme ‘synthase’ that will begin changing calories to fat. In fact, the increase in synthase production is estimated as five hundred times more when calcium levels are inadequate. This is why there is a link between nutritional deficiencies and obesity. Optimal Vitamin D levels in the body also promote regulation of cholesterol levels.

Vitamin C

Arizona State University researchers have completed a study that seems to indicate that Vitamin C supplementing may help prevent middle age weight gain. The study observed that inadequate concentration of Vitamin C in blood levels was linked to larger waists.

Researchers were able to deduce that optimum levels of Vitamin C in the blood helped fight middle age flabbiness. This could be because the Vitamin C in the blood helps burn calories faster while exercising. A daily Vitamin C tablet (accompanied by nutritionally balanced meals and regular exercise) can help keep away weight gain due to more efficient metabolism.

Vitamin C plays a crucial role in the production of the natural nutrient L-carnitine. This nutrient is responsible for carrying energy to every cell in the body. Lesser Vitamin C intake leads to insufficient production of L-carnitin because of which energy does not reach all the cells and gets deposited as fat. The fat gets stored in muscles.

Calcium

The Journal of Nutrition carries a report that claims Calcium supplement intake is linked to weight loss. The greater the intake of calcium, the more calories burned. Higher calcium supplementing reduced the risk of obesity.  For instance, lipase, an enzyme in the body that breaks down fats is activated by coral calcium

The study was published in the Journal of Nutrition. The significant advantage about calcium supplements and dietary sources is that they are so easy to take. Dairy products (milk, cheese yoghurt) are rich sources of calcium and are generally consumed daily.

If, for some reason you are unable to have dairy products you can always eat the following to maintain calcium levels

  • Calcium supplements
  • Almonds
  • Salmon
  • Mackerel
  • Oats
  • Leafy vegetables

For effective weight loss, it is important to combine Vitamin D, Vitamin C and calcium supplementing with regular exercise and nutritionally balanced food intake.
