What Causes Flatulence

Flatulence can certainly be very embarrassing as it is the excess gas in the stomach or intestines. Although flatulence is not a life threatening disorder it can affect your social and professional life. Flatulence is a mixture of five gases predominantly such as nitrogen, oxygen, carbon dioxide, hydrogen and methane.

 

The reason for flatulence is predominantly swallowing more air than required by the body or undigested food in the stomach and intestines. It could also be because of large amounts of bacteria in your stomach, consumption of malt extracts and fibrous foods, irritable bowel syndrome. Also, if you have irregular bowel movements and constipation flatulence could be the main after effect of these.

 

However, if you have flatulence that is consistent and refuses to go away whatever you eat then it could be an indication of an underlying health disorder and must not be taken lightly.

 

Also, if flatulence is a problematic area for you then you do need to give a closer look to your diet. Maintain a diary and notice which foods act as flatulence triggers. Once you have found these out avoid them. Usually foods that are known to cause flatulence are beans, cabbage, broccoli, cheese, sprouts and some kinds of bread. Certain high carbohydrate foods such as potatoes too could result in flatulence. Foods that are certainly not going to cause you any flatulence are rice, eggs, bananas, citrus fruits, grapes and meat.

 

There are things that you need to do to decrease flatulence if you are prone to it. Eat smaller and more frequent meals. Large meals will cause you to have difficulty in digesting. Avoid lots of fats and carbohydrates in your diet as these will be difficult to digest. Chew your food carefully and slowly. Do not gulp down food quickly. Maintain a regular routine of exercises. Go for a walk after you eat. Ensure that you have a lot of roughage in your diet so that you do not get constipated. If you have regular bowel movements it will stop the gas producing bacteria from creating flatulence.

 

There are also some home treatments that you could try to reduce flatulence. There are several kitchen cures that you can use. These are some tried and tested methods that people have tried and they have worked on them well.

 

Take a half a teaspoon of dry ginger powder with a pinch of asafetida and a pinch of rock salt in a cup of warm water. When you drink this early in the morning it will give you great relief from flatulence.

 

Another option is to mix 2 tablespoons for brandy with a cup of warm water and drink this mixture before going to bed.

 

You could also try to chew on dry ginger pieces which have been dipped in lime juice. Also, you could have a few drops of dill oil with a spoonful of honey after eating.

 

Hence, there are several precautions that you can take in order to avoid the malaise of flatulence.
